What is the multi-layer system?

6 minutes
The layering system is the secret to keeping you warm, dry, and comfortable during your outdoor activities. It's a versatile system that allows you to add or remove layers to adapt to the changes of the weather. Learn to layer your clothes perfectly to simplify your life and fully enjoy your favorite activities.

1. The base layer

- The first layer, placed directly on the skin, wicks away sweat and dries quickly to keep you dry during exercise.
- The best materials are wool and synthetic fibers, but avoid cotton at all costs as it absorbs sweat.
- Choose the thickness and weight of the fabric according to your activity and the temperature.
- Avoid irritation with seamless clothing or clothing with flat seams.
- Get clothes with a fitted but comfortable cut.

2. The middle layer

- Its role is to retain your body heat to keep you warm and continue the work of the base layer by wicking away moisture.
- Opt for a relatively fitted garment, but comfortable enough to be worn over the base layer and not restrict your movements.
- Choose the materials for your second layer according to the degree of warmth required for your activity.
- Opt for synthetic fabrics like fleece or choose an insulated coat made of down or synthetic.
- If you are more sensitive to the cold, combine a fleece garment and an insulated coat for more warmth.

3. The outer layer

- The final layer, often called the shell, protects you from the elements.
- Get breathable clothing to allow moisture from the inner layers to escape.
- Pay attention to the size! It should fit comfortably over the other layers, without being too loose to prevent heat loss.
- Opt for sealed seams to prevent water from seeping in and lightweight, compressible, and abrasion-resistant materials.
