How to choose the right footwear for your hikes?

6 minutes
Having the right footwear is essential to take advantage of the trails and the landscapes without any problem but finding you way around the variety of hiking footwear can be a headache. Here are some tips to help you make the perfect choice for your feet according to your favourite type of hike.

For easy day hikes

Hiking shoes are ideal for flatter trails or slightly uneven with a small elevation. They are often lightweight and flexible, so they will be lighter than hiking boots. They’ll give you a flat and stable surface with a robust outsole. They are also perfect if you plan on carrying a small backpack filled with a couple of essentials for your day on the trail.

For longer hikes on uneven terrains

Boots are the first choice for longer hikes on steep and technical terrains with mud, rocks and roots. Boots are usually more stable and rigid than shoes. They offer enhanced support and protection at the ankle thanks to the rising upper. You’ll get even more support than with shoes if you plan on carrying a heavy backpack equipped with all the necessities for a couple of days in nature. Don’t forget to wear your boots beforehand to break them in and avoid blisters and irritations.

The different materials

  • Leather: full-grain leather is solid and durable as well as being water and abrasion resistant. As robust as full-grain leather, nubuck leather is slightly more flexible. It is manufactured in a different way to give it a suede look.
  • Fabrics and synthetic leathers: they offer lighter shoes; however, they tend to wear out faster than leather. On the other hand, they are very fast drying when humid. These materials are a great vegan option.
  • Mesh panels: less resistant than other materials, they offer better breathability as well as reducing the weight.
  • Waterproof membrane: often made with Gore-Tex, they keep your feet dry in humid and wet conditions by preventing water infiltration and letting your feet breathe.

What to do with new hiking boots?

  1. Once at home, wear your boots indoors and outdoors to allow your feet to get used to them and to soften the boots. Do this exercise at different times of the day, as the volume of your feet can fluctuate during the day. Don't forget to wear hiking socks similar to those you will wear on your hikes.
  2. Take the time to properly lace your boots to ensure you are comfortable. To learn how to lace your boots properly, discover our tips a little further down.
  3. If necessary, apply a waterproofing treatment to your boots to keep your feet dry and extend their lifespan.

How to maintain your hiking boots?

After the hike

  1. Remove the insoles and open the boots as wide as possible to air them out and evacuate moisture.
  2. If your boots are wet, insert newspaper to absorb moisture and help them maintain their shape.
  3. Never dry your boots in front of a high heat source. The properties and integrity of the glue that holds the outsole could be compromised. Let them air dry in a ventilated area.

Cleaning

  1. Rinse your boots to remove mud and dirt.
  2. If necessary, clean your boots with a cloth or soft brush to make sure you remove all dirt.
  3. For effective cleaning, use cleaning products specifically designed for hiking boots.

How to lace your boots according to the terrain?

For the ascent, it is preferable to give your feet a little freedom. Lace the bottom of the boots firmly, then for the top make sure to leave more freedom for your feet. This allows for better flexion during ascents while providing support to your ankles.

For the descent, prioritize a snug lacing throughout the boots to ensure rigidity and maximum support.
