To continue enjoying our big green playground, and for years to come, it's important to take daily actions to do our part in the fight against climate change. One option is to equip yourself with local and eco-responsible outdoor brands to practice your outdoor activities.
Buying local not only encourages Quebec and Canadian entrepreneurs, but it also limits travel and thus minimizes greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Also pay particular attention to brands that use materials and processes that respect the planet.
Who are these local businesses and how are they making an ecological difference?
Krono Nutrition
Born from the collaboration between Kronobar and Rekarb, the Quebec company Krono Nutrition offers natural products designed and developed right here to support outdoor enthusiasts in their sporting activities. Their products are made of organic and non-GMO ingredients. To provide protein, Krono Nutrition uses plant-based protein, a much more ecological source of protein than animal protein. You only need to read the ingredients to realize that their products are truly made of simple and natural ingredients; we are far from a grocery list composed of incomprehensible ingredients.
Quartz Co.
Since 1997, Quartz Co. has been manufacturing high-end, durable clothing to help you face Quebec winters. Their factories located in Victoriaville and Montreal reduce the number of kilometers traveled by each coat, in addition to supporting local artisans. Their mission is to establish a responsible sourcing system, starting with product design. Quartz Co. carefully chooses its materials based on their environmental and social footprint. They are all certified Repreve, bluesign, Global Recycled Standard, Responsible Wool Standard, Global Organic Textile Standard, Responsible Down Standard, and more.
Arkel
From its beginnings in 1987, Arkel's mission was to design the best bike bags and panniers. Today, nearly 80% of their equipment is manufactured in Sherbrooke. For the remaining 20%, Arkel is very transparent and makes sure to work with foreign manufacturers who share the same social and environmental values as them. For the manufacturing of its products, Arkel strives to use extremely durable fabrics such as Cordura, X-Pac, and Ecopak. The durability of its products allows consumers to keep their bags for many years to avoid overconsumption. Since 2023, the company has completely eliminated its use of PFAS, synthetic substances that are very harmful to the environment.
Bonnetier
Since its opening in 2013, Bonnetier has been manufacturing clothing designed for your outdoor and everyday adventures in its Boucherville workshop. Local seamstresses and tailors work meticulously on each piece made from ZQ-certified merino wool. This seal ensures that the strictest standards are met regarding animal welfare and environmental protection. After 9 months in the environment, merino wool garments decompose entirely, leaving no trace that could harm our planet.
You are now ready to make a change! Look no further if you want to gear up to enjoy the great outdoors. If in doubt, consult the labels of the clothing and equipment you desire or our advisors can guide you towards our local and eco-responsible brands.
