With winter in full swing, what better way to embrace the season than by reaching new heights and taking on fresh challenges? Ice climbing is a thrilling way to enjoy snowy landscapes while pushing your limits. At La Cordée, we're passionate about ice climbing, and we're excited to share our favourite destinations for climbers of all levels.
Jean-Drapeau Park, Saint Helen's Island
For more experienced climbers, the urban ice wall at Parc Jean-Drapeau is the perfect spot to practise techniques after work and get ready for your next ascents. Beginners are also welcome, with introductory courses offered by instructors from Liberté Nord-Sud—and gear is included! Even in the heart of the city, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Jacques Cartier Bridge and the St. Lawrence River.
Attitude Montagne, Saint-Adolphe-d’Howard
Located less than an hour from Montréal, Attitude Montagne is one of the only outdoor ice climbing centres in Québec. Climbers of all levels can take part in courses to learn the basics or sharpen their skills. For more experienced climbers, the ice walls are also open for free climbing. To keep the fun going, don’t miss the “4 à 8 Glace et Bière” — a great chance to connect with the climbing community over a local craft beer.
Pont-Rouge, Îles aux Raisins
The magnificent ice climbing site of Pont-Rouge is located 30 minutes from Quebec City, with an approach walk of only 10 minutes. The ice cascade that runs along the Jacques-Cartier River is the favorite spot for expert climbers with many practicable routes. Offering the possibility of practicing ice and mixed climbing, this site hosts Festiglace, an internationally recognized event organized by volunteers and ice climbing enthusiasts.
Pitchoff Mountain, Keene
Perfect for the more adventurous, this ice climbing site is located in the Adirondacks, just two hours from Montréal. It’s an ideal place to reconnect with nature while enjoying your favourite winter sport. Discover the vast valley, where you can climb routes of varying difficulty in peaceful surroundings. For members of the Alpine Club of Canada, a hut is available at the base of the mountain for overnight ice climbing stays.
Once you've got these destinations in mind, don't neglect your equipment and gear up properly with our mountaineering boots, ice axes, and crampons!
