How to pack your backpack?

Here are a few tips to help you organize your backpack so you can easily access all your equipment throughout your trip:

  1. Use the top lid and hip belt pockets for items you’ll need often and quickly. This is the perfect place for energy snacks, water bottles, a headlamp, sunscreen, and more.
  2. Place lightweight gear you might need during your hike at the top of your bag, such as your rain jacket, insulated layer, first aid kit, or multifunctional neckwear.
  3. Pack heavier items like your stove, food, and cooking utensils in the center of your backpack, close to your back.
  4. Store bulkier items like your sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, or spare clothes at the bottom of your pack.

As a general rule, the heavier the gear, the closer it should be to your back. This helps distribute the weight evenly and makes your load more stable and comfortable to carry.

How to adjust your backpack?

Proper backpack adjustment is essential to prevent pain and injury during your outdoor outings.

Start by loosening all adjustment straps. Then follow these four steps for the perfect fit:

  1. Adjust the hip belt so that your hip bones sit at the center of the padding. Tighten the belt so that most of the weight rests comfortably on your hips.
  2. Tighten the shoulder straps by pulling on the webbing until you feel some resistance.
  3. Adjust the sternum strap until snug, but not restrictive. You should be able to breathe and move freely.
  4. Tighten the load lifters (the small straps above your shoulders) to improve balance and stability. Stop when you feel resistance. Adjusting these straps will give you better stability.

Must have accessories

Rain cover

Mother Nature can be unpredictable, so be prepared for the weather with a waterproof backpack cover. Some backpacks come with an integrated rain cover. If yours doesn’t, be sure to get one to keep your pack and gear dry.

Hydration

Stay hydrated throughout your hike with water bottles. Even better, if your backpack is compatible with a hydration reservoir, bring one along. You can also boost hydration with electrolyte tablets. If you’ll be refilling your water from natural sources, bring water purification tablets or a portable water filter.

Clothing

Always check the forecast before heading out and dress accordingly. That said, mountain weather can change quickly. Always bring a waterproof jacket in case of rain, and an extra warm layer, summits can be windy!
