Waxing Nordic Skis

Learn how to wax your cross-country skis like a pro for better glide, grip, and to extend the life of your ski bases.

Waxing raises many questions. To help you, find our guide La Cordée, written by waxing and cross-country ski maintenance experts.

Why you should wax?

Well-waxed cross-country skis give you optimal glide and grip, allowing you to fully enjoy your time on the trails. Waxing also helps preserve the base of your skis and extends their lifespan. Whether you’re a casual weekend skier or a seasoned pro, everyone can benefit from proper waxing.

Grip wax (kick wax)

Grip wax is applied to the kick zone located under the foot. The skier’s weight determines the length of this wax pocket. Grip wax allows for smooth and effective forward movement. Note that skis with scales or skins do not require grip wax.

Glide wax

This wax is applied only to the tips and tails of the skis, never to the kick zone.
It comes in liquid form for quick application, or solid form for hot waxing with an iron.
Hot-applied glide wax typically lasts much longer than liquid wax. Glide wax is what gives you that smooth, effortless glide that all skiers crave. The better the glide, the more fun you’ll have!

Our pro tips

  • Have your skis prepped at the start of the season to start off on the right foot.
  • When waxing the grip zone, apply several thin layers (4 to 5) rather than a single thick one. This is especially helpful for long-distance outings. For shorter outings (10–15 km), three thin layers usually do the trick.
  •  Keep a grip wax (or two) in your pocket to save yourself from trouble on the trail. Abrasive snow can wear down or completely remove your wax. Having grip wax on hand lets you reapply as needed. Plus, if the temperature changes during the day, having the right wax for the next temperature range could make all the difference!
