Bikepacking on the Horizon: Adapted Bags, Panniers and Tents

6 minutes

Long-distance cycling adventures and multi-day bikepacking trips are within everyone’s reach — as long as you’re properly equipped. Unlike traditional cycling touring, bikepacking focuses on lightweight, minimalist, and aerodynamic bags and additional storage solutions.

When it comes to gear, the emphasis is on the essentials and leaving the non-essentials behind. That large pepper mill you inherited from Uncle Henri? Leave it at home and opt for a small camping-friendly spice container instead — or even better, a few individual pepper packets, a small zip bag of pepper, or, sacrilege… no pepper at all. You get the idea!

Bags and panniers

Fortunately, some brands have continued to expand their bikepacking bag offerings since introducing their first models several years ago. Always focused on providing waterproof and durable solutions, Ortlieb is now a brand recognized worldwide in the adventure cycling world.

We carry several models of bikepacking bags in store and on our website. At La Cordée, you’ll find everything you need to bring your bikepacking plans to life this season—and many more to come—along with advice from our team of passionate experts.

Bikepacking Tents

And of course, to end your bikepacking days in comfort, nothing beats a good tent designed specifically for bikepacking. What does that mean? Mainly that the tent uses much shorter poles than a conventional tent, making them easier to pack into a bag or pannier.

These models also offer a range of features tailored to bikepacking, such as helmet storage pockets and integrated ground sheets or gear bins for storing cycling shoes, helmets and other accessories.

Finally, the storage bags for these tents often include built-in straps that allow them to be attached directly to the handlebars or the bike frame. That’s the icing on the cake!

With a good carrying system and the right tent, bikepacking quickly becomes much more accessible and enjoyable. If you’d like personalized advice on your gear, how to set up your bike, or ideas for routes and places to camp, stop by one of our stores—we’d be happy to chat with you about it.
