The purpose of lacing is to close the shoe or boot and to have it fit snugly and securely against the foot. There are several ways to lace footwear:
AVOIDING SENSITIVE AREAS
To keep from irritating a sensitive area on the top of the foot, avoid using the eyelet over the area in question. This will alleviate pressure in the problem spot and allow for tighter lacing elsewhere.
ALLEVIATING PRESSURE
Use the ladder lacing system to alleviate pressure on the top of the foot resulting from criss-crossing laces.
INCREASING SPACE IN THE TOE AREA
To increase space in the toe area and reduce pressure on the top of the foot, use this lacing system, and pull on the shorter lace.

PREVENTING THE HEEL FROM SLIDING
Tightening the top laces keeps the heel more securely in place, while the loops at the top prevent the foot from being pinched by the laces.

CREATING LACING LOOPS
If part of the foot requires looser lacing, while other parts must remain tighter, create a loop around the eyelet where you plan to loosen the laces.
