Socks: Quality

Fibres and construction:

The quality of a sock depends on the types and amounts of materials used. Certain fibres can be blended to produce a sock that is warm, quick-drying, durable and comfortable. Comfort can be improved by using a different weave or knit for the heel, the toes or the entire foot. Features such as elasticity and warmth can also be modified to maximize comfort. Try on different pairs to see how they compare in terms of comfort. Whatever your preference, keep in mind the following facts about fibres:

  • Nylon improves a product’s durability.
  • Some elastic fibres in socks will help them mould to your feet.
  • Nothing beats wool for durability and warmth, even when it is wet.
  • Certain synthetic fibres have excellent insulating properties. They are not, however, resistant to friction with footwear. They are most effective when worn inside a more resistant sock or when combined with other more abrasion-resistant fibres such as nylon.
  • Synthetic fibres, especially polyester and acrylic, generally help wick away moisture.

Activity:

Always choose a sock that is well suited to your activity. Even a high-quality sock will be disappointing if it is not used correctly, while a sock made of high-quality materials that is designed for a certain activity will provide the desired comfort.

Many manufacturers specify their product’s intended use on the product label. A given manufacturer may, for example, design a range of hiking socks varying in thickness and construction. Each model will have a different intended use, such as light hiking, extended hiking or cold-weather hiking. These types of guidelines help consumers make well-informed decisions.

Socks: Quantity

Many people wear two layers of socks, following the layering system used for clothing. Feet, however, have very different needs because their internal and external environments are very different from those of the rest of the body. Consider the following:

  • You rarely stop to remove or add a sock layer.
  • Regardless of the number of socks worn and whatever the climatic conditions, one fact remains: feet perspire.
  • Most activities require waterproof footwear and even if your shoe or boot has a waterproof-breathable membrane, it can offer only limited ventilation. Perspiration will not easily wick away and be propelled to the outside, keeping the inside of the footwear and the feet damp.

Given these facts, the same arguments that support the use of a layering system for clothing do not apply to socks. So, why wear two pairs of socks?

  • This is an excellent solution for people with sensitive skin. Limiting friction decreases the risk of developing blisters.
  • Wearing two pairs of socks is also recommended when using a vapour barrier. For more information on the subject, see Vapour barrier.

In all other cases, one pair of socks of an appropriate thickness for the activity is sufficient.

Vapour barrier

A vapour barrier is a completely waterproof sock that is used only in cold weather and that prevents perspiration from dampening the inside of your boots. Boots will therefore remain warm and dry, even at -40oC.

Although your foot will be in a very moist and uncomfortable environment, it will stay warm as long as the cold does not reach your condensed sweat. The only way to avoid the discomfort of this humid environment is to wear an ordinary sock inside the vapour barrier. This sock should be able to absorb a large percentage of the vapour and dry rapidly. To do so, the sock must be composed of mostly synthetic materials.

Good foot hygiene is always important in order to avoid developing unwanted skin conditions. Greater precautions must be taken to avoid such conditions when using a vapour barrier. Be sure to dry feet thoroughly and put on fresh socks as soon as the activity has ended, preferably before setting up camp.

What is the advantage of using a vapour barrier? It keeps boots dry in cold temperatures. The vapour barrier system is most useful when there is no access to a heated shelter over several days.

Gaiters

Gaiters play an important role in comfort. They keep out rain, mud, rocks and snow. The lower—the surface covering the boot up to the ankles—is generally waterproof. When insulated, gaiters provide considerable added warmth. Since they are subject to constant friction during hiking, they must be made of abrasion-resistant materials. Gaiters vary in length. High-top gaiters are preferable in winter, while short ones can be worn in all other seasons. If you are limited to just one pair, high-top gaiters will get you through any conditions. The uppers of some gaiters are made of a waterproof-breathable membrane, which will wick away perspiration in warmer weather.
